WOMEN CELEBRATE COURAGE AND THE VOTE

Women’s Equality Day Reformed will hold its 5th annual celebration and awards ceremony on Friday, August 18, between 12 Noon and 1:30 p.m. at the Michaelian Building’s 8th Floor’s large conference room, 148 Martine Avenue, White Plains.

The ceremony commemorating the 86th anniversary of women’s suffrage (August 26) will recall women’s courageous fight for equality and the vote, and the outstanding contributions of today’s Westchester women. The 2006 Honoree is Christine Mortell Plazas, business professional, 25-year community volunteer, and a founder of the Interracial Women’s Leadership Roundtable to promote racial understanding among women leaders and businesses in Westchester.

According to Committee spokesperson Regina Riely, “The day honors our feminist foremothers and celebrates with and for women of all voting persuasions. The ceremony that has taken place in the County for over thirty years honors a new group of Westchester women whose views celebrate the continuity of life and the inviolable dignity of each human being, where courage is the name of the game.”

There is limited capacity and a security check with photo ID at the county building. Seek long-term (3 hour) parking to avoid having to leave the ceremony. For additional details, call Joy 914-803-0057, or Judy 914-329-5163.

Judith Anderson, co-chairperson of the day’s events invites participation; “Our society is where it is today – for better or worse – inclusively with the voices of women. Let us reflect on that power and that responsibility.”

FFLA President Serrin Foster presents her talk,
"The Feminist Case Against Abortion"

For the past 19 years, Serrin Foster has championed the needs of those who cannot speak for themselves. Since 1994, Ms. Foster has served Feminists for Life of America, initially as Executive Director and currently as President. Like the early American feminists who opposed abortion, Feminists for Life works to systematically eliminate the root causes that drive women to abortion by facilitating practical solutions. FFL has emerged as the long-sought-after link between pro-life and women's organizations, working on legislative efforts such as child support enforcement and the Violence Against Women Act, and opposing child exclusion provisions in welfare reform.

In 2000, Ms. Foster particiapted in a panel discussion on abortion at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government. She was joined by Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of NARAL and former abortion provider who has since become a pro-life activist, Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country, and Bill Baird, director of the Pro-Choice League.

Ms. Foster also spoke at a U.S. Department of State "Bringing Cairo Home" conference in 1995 on the parrallels between the needs of women in developing countries and the obstacles faced by the early feminists.

Recognizing the critical need for proactical resources for pregnant and parenting students, Feminists for Life has launched a nationwide initiative to ensure that college students have the resources they need to make life-affirming choices. Through its College Outreach Program, FFL provides pregnancy resource kits to college health clinics, students, advisors and counselors across the country, and leads on-campus discussions on developing practical resources for pregnant and parenting studens on college campuses.

In 2000, at the annual Life Conference held at the Parliament Buildings at Stormont, Northern Ireland, Ms. Foster presented "The Feminist Case Against Abortion." This speech has been included in the anthology Women's Rights, published in 2001 by Greenhaven Press as one in a series entitled "Great Speeches in History."

Since 1996, Sally Winn has been an outspoken advocate for women and children. She began by serving on many state and local Right to Life boards and went on to

FFLNY Sponsors 10th Anniversary Anti-Death Penalty Vigils

Monthly Vigils

On Friday, January 14, FFLNY will sponsor the monthly vigil that commemorates loss of life through state-sponsored executions throughout our country. The vigil takes place at the Hall of Justice in Rochester (across the street from the Blue Cross Arena) at noon and lasts about 20 minutes. We will offer an interfaith reading, then list the names of people who remain on death row in the northeastern states. We all wear pinnies that say, "Don't Kill in My Name." If you would like to attend, or would like more details, please e-mail us at info@fflny.org.

Anti-Death Penalty Activities in New York State

This year the Reconciliation Network: Don't Kill in My Name (of which FFLNY is a member) is celebrating ten years of vigils, which we began on the second Friday of every month in the fall of 1995. These and other activities call attention to NYS's legalization of capital punishment and celebrate its failure to impose that punishment before the law was found unconstitutional. At this point capital punishment in NYS is moot, but will return to the legislature in the spring. Hearings about the death penalty will take place in Albany and New York City in January. FFLNY intends to send members to these hearings. If you are a member and you would like to join us at one of these hearings, please e-mail us at info@fflny.org.

Book Discussions

There will be 3 book discussions about the death penalty, all at Writers and Books on University Avenue. They are all on Wednesday evenings: Jan 19, Feb 17, and Mar 17, 2005. Watch this site for details.

D&C Article Nov. 22; 100th Vigil on death penalty Dec. 12

Suzanne Schnittman, founding member of Reconciliation Network: Don't Kill in My Name, was interviewed by Mike Zeigler of the D&C for an article he is preparing for this Saturday, November 22. She and four other FFLNY members, Carol Crossed, Mary Dwelley, and Dorothy Siegel, met with newly elected D.A. Mike Green about the death penalty before the election. We mailed information about our pro-woman, pro-life views and will maintain a communication with him. We hope to meet with him about the Unborn Victims legislation.

Suzanne and the Network are planning a major "Day on Death Penalty" next September 10. We currently are gathering information about books, movies, and live entertainment (music, plays, dance) that address the death penalty. The next meeting of the planning committee is January 10 at the Judicial Process Commission Office on Fitzhugh Street.

The 100th vigil on the death penalty, which about five FFLA members regularly attend, is scheduled for December 12 at noon at the Hall of Justice.

The Victoria Secret Fasion Show itself may be past, but the need for protest continues:

Protest Needed! - Read this and send a link to this page to as many People as You Possibly Can!

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show soft-core porn hour-long infomercial touted to be "The Sexiest Night On Television" was aired during primtetime viewing on CBS affiliates around the country on November 19.   This erotic display of women strutting the runways in lingerie will portray women as nothing more than sex objects - where scantily-clad bodies are prized possesions.  Last year, Concerned Women for America and National Organization for Women formally protested this show. This year, Feminists for Life spearheads the charge!

We need you to register your disgust with this show ASAP.

What to Do:
1) E-mail the Federal Communication Commission - they have rules and regulations against obscenity and indecency and this virtually crosses the line. The FCC need your complaints in writing - you need to include your name, address, e-mail, and a brief description of your opposition.

The e-mail fccinfo@fcc.gov
Last year after the show the FCC's e-mail system was overloaded and crashed because of the incredible volume of complaints - let's triple that number! It's time for them to take these complaints seriously.

2) E-mail CBS - audsvcs@cbs.com
Threaten to boycott any sponsors fo the program (last year it was Budweiser Light and Dodge - intended for the largely male audience), as well as the CBS network.

3) Pick up the phone and call your own CBS affiliate.  This is probably the most effective thing to do.  Two affiliates did move it from primetime to the weekend after mid-night last year.

4) File your complaint also with the  Parents Television Council on the e-complaint form (that will be forwarded via them to the fcc).  Go to www.parentstv.org/actionalert/fccform.asp

5) Take advertisements in the VS stores
Calling Victoria's Secret won't get you anywhere, but next time you are near a VS store feel free to take the "hand bill" advertisements  near the cash register and throw them inteh garbage (a subtle act of civil disobedience).

6) Forward this information in an e-mail to every person in your address book!

Thank you for your respect of women and children.

"positioned portraits"
photographic work by LindaBeth Nichols Flack
on display May 1-31, 2003

Canaltown CoffeeRoasters
1805 East Avenue
Rochester, NY
hours: Monday-Thursday 7AM-7PM, Friday and Saturday 7AM-midnight, Sunday 9AM-4PM.

The series positioned portraits is a photographic work that is both about the women depicted and an exploration of the idea of photographic representation of women in general. The images seek to present the women as they present themselves to the artist, in a way which does not pretend an unmediated, objective view into the "essence" of these women. Because the images are based on my relationship to the women, I present them as simultaneously subjects and objects of the photographic gaze. Furthermore, as images of women, they challenge the traditional ways of viewing Woman by communicating aspects of the women pictured through focusing on untraditional elements of the female body. This allows the images to speak about the women themselves instead of the "viewing of Woman" that takes place in much traditional figurative photography.

Thursday, May 15, 2003:

Feminists for Life of New York is sponsoring an exhibitor's table at the American Heart Association's 3rd Annual Women's Legacy Luncheon, "Target the Heart." The luncheon will be held from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Drumlin's Country Club in Syracuse, New York. The topic of the luncheon, which is attended by many in the health and professional communities, is, "facing the critical health issues of women today. Ideas for living a heart healthy lifestyle." The keynote speaker is Kathrine Switzer, Emmy Award-winning television commentator best known as the woman who challenged the all-male tradition of the Boston Marathon by becoming the first woman to officially enter and run the event.

FFLNY invites members and friends to sit together at a table hosted by Chris Fadden-Fitch. Cost of the luncheon is $40.00 per person, $20.00 for FFL members. To request a seat at an FFL table, contact Chris at cmfitch@juno.com To purchase tickets directly from the American Heart Association, call their Central New York office at (315) 234-4747, and mention you heard of the event through Feminists for Life.

2ND ANNUAL FFLNY LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY DAY
- Tuesday, April 1, 2003

Pro-woman, pro-life: It's no joke! Feminists for Life of New York is having it's second annual Lobby Day in Albany on April 1, 2003. We are lobbying in support of the Unborn Victims of Violence Act and the Senate's Amendment to the Family Court Act (S2413), for which we will also be trying to recruit a sponsor in the Assembly. Both issues are very pro-woman, pro-life. We will be visiting members from the Senate Codes Committee and the Assembly Health Committee on Unborn Victims, and the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding the Amendment to the Family Court Act. Additionally, we will be dropping off legislative packets with fact sheets on the issues to EACH legislative office in the capitol. Now would be a great time to send letters to YOUR representatives regarding these bills, as Feminists for Life will be "fresh" in their memory!

Celebration for Life Dinner

Dear Friend,

It is a great pleasure to announce that the Celebration for Life Dinner, which honors the Diocesan Vita Award winners for commitment to the principles of the Consistent Life Ethic, will again be held. The dinner is scheduled for May 8, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Catherines in Mendon, NY. Please save the date!

This year, Amy Crossed-Rieck, FFLNY At-large Board Member, is among one of 5 winners for the Vita Award. She serves on the Women's Commission of the Diocese of Rochester and is active in Project Rachel, a post-abortion counseling program. She is a most deserving member! As has been the practice in the past, Bishop Matthew Clark will present the Vita Award to the winners.

In addition to recognizing the achievements of the Vita Award winners, the Celebration for Life Dinner makes possible the support of services for the unborn, the infirm, the imprisoned, the impoverished and advocacy for peace. Your presence at the Celebration for Life Dinner is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for all that you do for life. I look forward to receiving the Vita Award nominations and to seeing you on May 8th. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (585) 328-3228 extension 304 or via e-mail at armantrout@dor.org.
